Africa Beach Holidays kenya and Tanzania
East Africa Coast lies endless miles of gorgeous,
pristine beaches offering some of the most sophisticated,
modern accommodation in Africa
THE
KENYA COAST
The
Kenya coastline stretches beyond the old town of
Lamu bordering with Somalia to Tanzania in the south.
In-between lies endless miles of gorgeous, pristine
beaches offering some of the most sophisticated,
modern accommodation in Africa. Unlike neighbouring
Tanzania, dynamite blasting has not destroyed the
coastline. East Africa's first marine parks were
gazetted here and true to Kenya's conviction to
preserve its natural heritage these areas are well
patrolled. Opportunities for snorkelling and scuba
diving are excellent, Kenya boasting a string of
islands and some of the best coral reefs in the
world (on par with the Red Sea and Australias
Great Barrier Reef).
Seeped
in history, Kenya acted as the stepping-stone into
central, East Africa as far back as 14th century
when the Chinese and traders from the Far East discovered
its shores. What followed was a string of events
leading to date. Portuguese galleons, British explorers
and missionaries such as Dr. David Livingstone and
the Arab slave trade are woven in a history of battles
won and lost, quests for treasure, the rise and
fall of civilizations, crowned sultans, great forts
and palaces. The narrow streets of Mombasa
Island and Lamu are a living history book.
The
Kenya coast is best divided into four regions:
1.
Mombasa Island and the immediate north coast resorts
accessible via the Nyali Bridge.
2.
The Watamu, Malindi areas further north (with Lamu
further North, best reached by air).
3.
The South Coast approximately one hours drive
from Mombasa entailing a short ferry crossing.
4.
Wasini/Shimoni (along the Tanzanian border) along
the far reaches of Kenya's south coast.
The
high standard of accommodation found at the coast
is no exception and ranges from self-catering cottages
to highly sophisticated hotels. Too numerous to
mention we have highlighted popular properties below.
